25 years across more than 40 countries — shipyards in Asia and Europe, rigs in West Africa and the Middle East, fields in the Caspian, projects across North and South America, and industrial sites on six continents. I've seen most failure modes at least once.
A specialist, not a generalist
My work sits where electrical power meets control systems — and where most things go wrong on complex installations. Over the past 25 years I’ve commissioned, serviced, and rescued systems for drilling contractors, shipbuilders, vessel owners, EPCs, and operators across more than 40 countries.
From new-build battery-electric ferries to top-drive rescues on land rigs and platform revamps on producing fields, the work is essentially the same: understand the system, get it stable, get it back to production. Since 2020 I’ve worked freelance under jvissers.com, operating from a fully equipped 120 m² workshop in the Netherlands and travelling to client sites worldwide on short notice — direct for owners and operators, or through EPCs, system integrators, and yard project teams.
Where I add the most value
The systems below are what I work on day-in, day-out. If your issue sits somewhere in between disciplines — or you’re not sure where the fault actually lives — that’s usually where I’m needed most. The boundaries between drive, control, and power are where the real problems hide.
Siemens (Step7, TIA Portal), Allen Bradley, WAGO, Praxis. Troubleshooting legacy logic, rewriting code blocks (STL/LAD/FBD), and commissioning modern PLC platforms. Many service calls start as a "mechanical problem" and end up in the control code.
VFD configuration, fault diagnosis, and field repairs across major platforms — Siemens, ABB, Unico, IDM. Ross Hill and NOV SCR systems on drilling rigs. Field repairs on high-power units that most vendors won't touch on-site.
Full electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic commissioning for new installations and revamps. ATEX commissioning, structured handovers, documented test protocols, and the kind of fault-finding that only comes with experience.
Vessel propulsion, energy management, and process control — integrated over Modbus, Profibus, NMEA0183/N2K, J1939, and Ethernet so the bridge sees what the engine room is doing and the load management actually does what it promises.
Specialist service on top drive installations — Tesco, Varco, ABB, Canrig — and the VFD-houses that feed them. Rig moves, re-commissioning, panel rewires after fires, and hard-failure diagnosis on offshore and land campaigns.
Optimisation of charging systems, energy management, and propulsion control on fully battery-powered and hybrid vessels — passenger ferries, water buses, and crew transfer platforms. A fast-moving field where conservative engineering still wins.

A meaningful share of my work involves proprietary control systems, prototype installations, or operationally sensitive data. I treat confidentiality the way I treat safety — non-negotiable. NDA by default.
